Joplin High School Memo

Students & Parents Weekly Communication

May 10, 2026
Portrait of a Graduate

Message from the Principal

Good Afternoon Joplin High School Eagles Family!

Happy Mother's Day to all the moms of Eagle Nation! I hope this day has been a great one for you!

Last week was another great week at JHS, especially for our seniors. They truly took to heart to finish this semester and year strong, as I believe we may end up having the largest number of graduates at JHS since 1979. Congratulations to the Class of 2026.

My message is not much different than last week, as we need to make sure our underclassmen finish the year strong. The Time is NOW!

If there is anything you ever need, please feel free to call me at 417.625.5230 or email me at randyoliver@joplinschools.org. I would like to remind our students to WORK HARD, BE KIND, and GO EAGLES!

Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Oliver

Teacher Spotlight #1

Ms. Ashley Trotnic

Mrs. Ashley Trotnic serves JHS as the theater teacher! She is a proud graduate of Joplin High School, check out her shirt in the photo, it’s an original from her graduating class. It’s right here at JHS where her love for theater first began. She was heavily involved in theater as a student and carried that passion with her to Missouri Southern State University as a performance major. Inspired by her own high school teacher, Bonnie ,Schurman Ashley knew she wanted to follow in her footsteps and become a high school theater teacher. Now in her 13th year at JHS, Ashley truly has what she calls her “dream job.” She teaches Acting I–IV, Theater Performance, and Theater Tech. Her year is filled with productions: a fall play, winter children’s play, spring musical, and even a summer musical theater program.

Ashley’s life outside of school is just as busy and joyful. She is the proud mom of Jasper, a 10-year-old baseball star, and Evelyn, a 5-year-old dancer. Much of her free time is spent cheering them on at games and performances. Of course, theater is never far away. This summer, Ashley will travel to London with a theater group for a performance tour. When she thinks about the future, Ashley hopes for more time with family, opportunities to travel, and continued involvement in community theater.

Teacher Spotlight #2

Mr. Caiton Bandy

Mr. Caiton Bandy is one of our Math teachers, teaching Geometry and Algebra I B while also sponsoring the philosophy club. Caiton graduated from Carl Junction and started his college journey at Crowder College with plans to become an engineer. While tutoring math at Crowder, he discovered a love for teaching that changed his path entirely. Ultimately, he finished his teaching degree at Missouri Southern State University and landed right here at JHS where he has been ever since. He is in his 6th year and doesn’t foresee ever leaving.

Family is central to his life. He and his wife, Jayden, have two young sons, Jasper (3) and Ronan (1), with a baby girl due this summer. That’s enough to keep anyone busy but outside the classroom, Caiton enjoys deep philosophical conversations (ask him about free will!), plays soccer weekly, something he’s done since age four, and loves rock climbing with his brothers. Summers are his favorite time of year because they allow him to slow down and spend uninterrupted time with his family. When he looks ahead to retirement, Caiton imagines owning land, slowing the pace of life, and enjoying more of those simple, meaningful days at home.

Level Up

What is the Level Up Program at JHS?

LEVEL UP

Dedicated School Time for Extra Support
Starting in January 2026, all Joplin High School students will have the opportunity to receive dedicated, in-school support services to help them Level Up their academic success in the classes and subjects they need it most. Level Up options will fill the former Transitions period, and will be offered every day of the week.

Level Up is designed to help students improve grades, build skills, and stay on track for graduation before small problems become large obstacles. The time is focused on individual growth and success, not punishment. We understand that everyone needs support sometimes, even when the grade card shows an A or a B, and Level Up is designed to meet those needs right in the middle of the school day, without asking students to come early or stay late for tutoring. The goal is effectively to help students take ownership of their own learning so they can Level Up their academics.

Three Levels of Opportunity

Intervention: Targeted Support
This is a 30-minute session that provides focused help on a SPECIFIC LEARNING STANDARD. Students will work with a teacher to relearn, practice, and retest to master a specific standard in a specific content area.

Academic Opportunity: The Catch-Up
This is 30 minutes of structured time for students who have a D or an F to work with a teacher to improve their grades, complete missing work, retake assessments, and get help.

Eagle Time: The Reward
This is a 30-minute reward period for students who are meeting expectations and mastering standards as expected. Students can choose from a variety of non-classroom locations to socialize, get ahead on work, read, or relax.

DEADLINE EXTENDED for Doris Walters Prize for Young Writers

If you and your students are anything like us, you've been swamped since spring break. For that reason, we have extended the deadline for the Doris Walters Prize for Young Writers to Monday, June 1st. Please encourage your high school students to submit original poetry, original short fiction, or poetry recitations at www.tjeffschool.org/academics/doris-walters/.
This writing competition, open to all area high school students, is held in honor of the late Dr. Doris Walters, who served as a literature and education professor at MSSU for more than 30 years. Please reach out with any questions or if you are interested in serving as a judge. And please share this opportunity with your students. We would love to see strong representation from across the region!
