INTERVENTION: TARGETED SUPPORT
Students will be requested by a teacher to join them for a three-week period of intervention that provides focused help on a specific learning standard. Requests will automatically be updated in the student's schedule, noting the location and teacher for their Intervention (RTI). The student will work with the teacher to relearn, practice, and retest to master the content. This time is geared toward any student not yet proficient on a specific learning standard, and is not related to a letter grade
ACADEMIC OPPORTUNITY: CATCH UP
Students who have a D or an F in any class will be requested by a teacher to join them for a three-week period of Academic Opportunity. This time will provide structured resources to help students improve their grades, complete missing work, retake assessments, and get broad help from a teacher. Requests will automatically be updated in the student's schedule, noting the location and teacher for their Academic Opportunity time.
EAGLE TIME: REWARD
Students who have an A, B, or C in all classes and are meeting proficiency in all standards will be allowed to spend this period relaxing, catching up on school work, hanging out with friends, or reading, in one of several Eagle Time locations like the library, the cafeteria, the gym, or the Rose Garden. Students will be supervised by staff at all times, and are required to uphold all school procecures including the cell phone ban.

At Joplin High School, our goal is to support every student to reach success – however that looks for them as individuals. We noticed that when we tried to schedule extras supports like tutoring outside of school hours, many students were unable to take advantage of the opportunity due to transportation issues, work schedules, or personal reasons.
For many years now, we have used a 30-minute Transitions period on Mondays and Fridays each week to help students navigate their high school experience and prepare for adulthood. With the start of Freshman Academy last year, we noticed that course would satisfy all of the Transition requirements in one school year.
So in anticipation of starting the Level Up program this semester, we updated the daily schedule to include Transitions courses every day of the week, then condensed that course material to be completed in the first three weeks of the semester. We will henceforth use the Transitions period (11:00-11:30am daily) for the rest of the school year as Level Up time.
A student will recieve their 3-week Level Up assignment (Intervention, Academic Opportunity, or Eagle Time) through an automatic PowerSchool update every three weeks. The 3-week cycle allows three chances for a student to Level Up within a 9-week academic quarter.

Students in Intervention can Level Up by successfully mastering the specific learning standard for which they were assigned intervention.
Students in Academic Opportunity can Level Up by successfully raising their D or F letter grade to an A, B, or C.
-
Each day of the week is associated with a certain subject area. This allows students who need support in more than one subject area to not be limited to a choice of which subject area to focus on.
Mondays: Electives
Tuesdays: Math
Wednesdays: Science
Thursdays: English
Fridays: Social StudiesIf a student only needs to close learning gaps in math, but is successfully meeting standards in all other subject areas, they will only be scheduled for intervention on Tuesdays, for example. If they also are missing a standard in English, they will attend on Thursdays as well, and so on as needed.

A learning standard is a specific topic of mastery within a unit of study in a core or elective subject area. For example, a student enrolled in Biology could be studying a unit on the Scientific Method and Metric System. Within that unit, there are standards to:
- Actively demonstrate the steps of the scientific method
- Utilize laboratory equipment safely & effectively
- Calculate data using the metric system (SI)
- Analyze data and construct meaningful graphs/ data tables
- Evaluate quantitative and qualitative data
- Communicate results effectively
Perhaps the student was absent during the week the class focused on calculating data using the metric system and analyzing data to construct graphs and data tables, and they’ve missed mastery of those particular standards. Perhaps they still have an A, B, or C in the class, but the teacher notices that by missing those standards, the student lacks understanding that will be imperative for mastery of upcoming units and tests. This student is a good candidate for intervention, and can be requested to recieve targeted support in just these standards to support their further success.

No. Students who are requested to attend an Intervention or Academic Opportunity session are required to comply. Their schedule will be automatically updated and they will be expected to arrive to the appointed classroom during Level Up time (11:00am to 11:30am daily) during their 3-week session. Attendance will be taken in Intervention and Academic Opportunity classes as usual.
-
At the end of each 3-week period each quarter, teachers will upload all grades into PowerSchool. At that time, they will also note which students need additional support to close the gap on a particular learning standard, and which students have a D or an F. Students with those needs will be requested to join Intervention or Academic Opportunity sessions for the following 3 week period.
