Course Selection Quick Reference Guide

How to Prepare for Enrollment

  1. Review the JHS Course Catalog for graduation requirements, course descriptions, prerequisites, credit values, etc.
  2. Familiarize yourself with the Course Selection Form.
  3. Visit with teachers regarding classes they teach that you might be interested in.
  4. Visit with parents/guardians regarding course selections and future plans.
  5. If you are interested in pursuing an Honors Diploma or NCAA eligibility, it is your responsibility to let your counselor know so that correct classes can be taken for those programs.
  6. Be sure to bring your signed enrollment sheet to enrollment day!

Enrollment sheets will be provided to students by their school counselor. An example of the enrollment sheet can be viewed or downloaded here, but please be aware that it may not be the most current form available. Always defer to the form you receive from your counselor during enrollment periods.

Important Enrollment Reminders

  • You are completing course requests. Your requests may not be your final schedule, nor can counselors assure that you will be scheduled into everything you choose.
  • Choose wisely! Only approved schedule changes can be made once your schedule has been built.

Schedule changes can be approved for the following reasons:

  • Incorrect core class
  • Replacing a class you took during summer school
  • Program change (ex. no longer in band/orchestra)
  • Missing a prerequisite

Per the JHS Student Handbook, changes cannot be made based on teacher preference, class, and/or lunch hour request.

Enrollment Form Tips

  1. Pay close attention to the directions at the top of the worksheet. Ranking your electives will help counselors place you into the classes you want the most.
  2. Pay close attention to which grade levels are eligible to take the course.
  3. The legend near the bottom of the worksheet provide notations that describe if a class is required for a certain program; if you must take another class before you are able to enroll; or if teacher permission is required to enroll.
  4. When writing class choices, make sure you have chosen classes that fulfill your requirements, fill your schedule completely, and fill both semesters completely.
  5. Both parent & student signatures are required. Students with completed forms (including signatures) will be given priority enrollment.
  6. IMPORTANT: The school’s Master Schedule is built from student requests, therefore schedule changes will only be made when school starts per school policy.
