Message from the Principal

Good Afternoon Joplin High School Eagles Family!

Last week was another great week at JHS. My message is not much different than last week, as we need to make sure our students, especially seniors, finish the year strong. With this being the last week of school for the Class of 2026, please make sure you are getting all your work completed to ensure you make it across the stage at graduation. The Time is NOW!

If there is anything you ever need, please feel free to call me at 417.625.5230 or email me at randyoliver@joplinschools.org. I would like to remind our students to WORK HARD, BE KIND, and GO EAGLES!

Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Oliver

Teacher Spotlight #1

Ms. Rebecca Olivares

Mrs. Olivares is one of our wonderful English teachers here at JHS. She is Neosho born and raised with her own kids are being sixth-generation to graduate from Neosho High School. She came to Joplin High School in 2021, just after COVID, and says she immediately fell in love with the school and community. She appreciates how much there is to do in Joplin and especially values the diversity of the student body. With 26 years in education, Rebecca is deeply student-centered and says by the end of each year, she treats her students like they are her own kids. She loves helping students make meaning in their lives.

Rebecca and her husband, Nicolas, who works in network security, have three children. Carlie is 31 and has blessed Rebecca with two grandsons. Nico is 21, a soft-hearted “mama’s boy” by her description, and Mari is a freshman at JHS. Their home is also filled with personality thanks to two Japanese Chin dogs, Hamlet and Zeus.

Outside of school, Rebecca enjoys spending time in her backyard gardening and planting flowers, sipping coffee while chatting with friends, and traveling. She has visited many countries and treasures the experiences and memories from those trips.

When she thinks about retirement, Rebecca pictures living somewhere warm within an hour of a beach, where she can sit in the sand and read. She also hopes to teach online so she can remain mobile and enjoy life’s flexibility alongside her husband’s schedule.

Level Up

What is the Level Up Program at JHS?

LEVEL UP

Dedicated School Time for Extra Support
Starting in January 2026, all Joplin High School students will have the opportunity to receive dedicated, in-school support services to help them Level Up their academic success in the classes and subjects they need it most. Level Up options will fill the former Transitions period, and will be offered every day of the week.

Level Up is designed to help students improve grades, build skills, and stay on track for graduation before small problems become large obstacles. The time is focused on individual growth and success, not punishment. We understand that everyone needs support sometimes, even when the grade card shows an A or a B, and Level Up is designed to meet those needs right in the middle of the school day, without asking students to come early or stay late for tutoring. The goal is effectively to help students take ownership of their own learning so they can Level Up their academics.

Three Levels of Opportunity

Intervention: Targeted Support
This is a 30-minute session that provides focused help on a SPECIFIC LEARNING STANDARD. Students will work with a teacher to relearn, practice, and retest to master a specific standard in a specific content area.

Academic Opportunity: The Catch-Up
This is 30 minutes of structured time for students who have a D or an F to work with a teacher to improve their grades, complete missing work, retake assessments, and get help.

Eagle Time: The Reward
This is a 30-minute reward period for students who are meeting expectations and mastering standards as expected. Students can choose from a variety of non-classroom locations to socialize, get ahead on work, read, or relax.

DEADLINE EXTENDED for Doris Walters Prize for Young Writers

If you and your students are anything like us, you've been swamped since spring break. For that reason, we have extended the deadline for the Doris Walters Prize for Young Writers to Monday, June 1st. Please encourage your high school students to submit original poetry, original short fiction, or poetry recitations at www.tjeffschool.org/academics/doris-walters/.
This writing competition, open to all area high school students, is held in honor of the late Dr. Doris Walters, who served as a literature and education professor at MSSU for more than 30 years. Please reach out with any questions or if you are interested in serving as a judge. And please share this opportunity with your students. We would love to see strong representation from across the region!

Carnegie Young Leaders

I'm reaching out on behalf of C&S to recruit the next class of Carnegie Young Leaders, a yearlong fellowship supporting teams of youth (ages of 14-24) in developing real-world solutions to issues they identify in their community.
We are particularly interested in reaching applicants in MO and would love your help sharing this opportunity with students in your district. Applications are open until May 4th. I have included more information about the fellowship below and you can use our partner toolkit with assets to spread the word in your newsletters, on social media and beyond.

The Carnegie Young Leaders experience provides:

  • Expert coaching to help level up fellows’ impact
  • A network of peers across the country to lean on and learn from
  • Opportunities for in-person learning, project development and networking
