  • More details about credit recovery will be provided in this space soon.

  • Summer Theatre is a dynamic, performance-based course that gives students the opportunity to rehearse and produce a full theatrical production during summer school. The class meets daily from 8:30 AM to 11:45 AM and provides hands-on experience in acting, stage movement, character development, technical theatre, and production teamwork.

Joplin High School is proud to be one of the only area schools to stage a complete theatre production as part of its summer school program. Students will work collaboratively from auditions through rehearsals to a final performance, gaining valuable skills in confidence, communication, creativity, and responsibility.

This program is open to all area students entering grades 9–12, not just JHS students. Whether a student is an experienced performer or new to the stage, Summer Theatre offers an exciting opportunity to grow artistically, build friendships, and be part of a high-quality production experience.

Joplin High School EAGLE FLEX Alternative Diploma
The State of Missouri provides school districts with the opportunity to create alternative programming options for students in their junior and/or senior year of high school. Joplin High School offers students who enroll in the EAGLE FLEX Alternative Diploma Program an opportunity to earn a high school diploma by meeting certain requirements. Twenty-four units of credit are required for completion of the program.

Students participating in the program will be considered full-time students of the school district and will:

    • Be offered a non-traditional educational path towards earning a high school diploma
    • Be required to meet a 95% attendance rate
    • Have the skills necessary to pursue job opportunities through career awareness activities and job training activities
    • Successfully complete courses to meet minimum state diploma requirements by the end of the student’s senior year, and acquire 24 units of credit to earn a diploma.

Credits earned by students during their 9th and 10th grade years will be merged with credits earned during their junior and senior year in the FLEX program. Students will be able to earn up to 4 core/career education credits per year in a competency-based system (one each of math, science, English, social studies, and/or career education).

Students can also earn up to 5 credits of work experience based on their individual personal plan of study. Students can earn more credits per year than traditional schooling, depending on their ability to work in a computer-aided and competency-based system.

Students are referred to the FLEX program through their counselor and/or grade level principal.

  • Purpose:
Summer School Health is designed to provide incoming freshmen and other eligible students the opportunity to complete the required Health course prior to the start of the regular school year. Completing Health during the summer allows students to begin high school on track with graduation requirements and provides additional flexibility in their academic schedules during the school year.

This course focuses on essential health concepts including personal wellness, mental and emotional health, nutrition, substance abuse prevention, healthy relationships, and decision-making skills that support student success in high school and beyond.

    Eligibility Requirements:

    • Open to incoming freshmen who have not yet taken a Health course.
    • Open to any current high school student who has not previously been enrolled in Health.
    • Not available to students who have taken and failed Health during the regular school year. Those students must enroll in a credit recovery Health course to recover the credit not earned.

    Course Expectations

    • Class Schedule:
      • Monday–Thursday:
        • AM Session: 8:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
        • PM Session: 12:15 p.m. – 3:30 p.m.
      • Friday:
        • AM Session only: 8:30 a.m. – 11:45 a.m.
    • Students are required to attend one (1) in-person session per week (out of the nine sessions offered Monday–Friday).
    • The remaining coursework may be completed virtually from home.
    • Weekly in-person attendance is required so students can check in directly with their teacher. This ensures students are making adequate progress and receiving the academic support they need.
    • Students are expected to complete all virtual assignments, participate in required activities, and meet all deadlines.
    • Credit will be awarded upon successful completion of all course requirements in alignment with district and state standards.

Regular communication, responsible time management, and consistent engagement—both in person and online—are essential for success in this hybrid course

  • Joplin High School offers Introduction to Fitness as a summer school option for students seeking to earn a required Physical Education credit in a structured, supportive environment.

This course meets Monday through Friday from 12:15 PM – 3:30 PM during the summer term. It is designed for students who would like to complete their PE requirement in the summer in order to create more flexibility in their academic schedule during the school year.

    Introduction to Fitness focuses on:

    • Foundational fitness concepts
    • Personal wellness and goal setting
    • Basic strength and cardiovascular training
    • Proper exercise technique and safety
    • Exposure to a variety of activities designed for students of all ability levels

Students will be introduced to many traditional and team-based physical education games that encourage participation, cooperation, and enjoyment. Activities are structured so that students of all skill levels can be actively involved and experience success.

This course differs from the more physically rigorous Summer PE conditioning class. While students will be active and engaged daily, Introduction to Fitness emphasizes skill development, knowledge, inclusive participation, and steady improvement rather than high-intensity athletic training.

This class is ideal for students who want to earn PE credit while building a strong foundation for lifelong health, fitness, and positive engagement in physical activity.

  • Summer Physical Education is a high-intensity fitness course designed for students who are motivated to improve their overall physical performance, strength, endurance, and conditioning. This course is ideal for student-athletes preparing for upcoming sports seasons as well as any student who desires to elevate their personal fitness level.

The focus of Summer PE is to:

    • Increase cardiovascular endurance
    • Improve strength, speed, and agility
    • Develop flexibility and injury prevention habits
    • Promote personal accountability and goal setting
    • Build mental toughness and resilience through structured training

This course is not a recreational PE class. Students should expect structured workouts, progressive training plans, and performance-based activities designed to challenge them physically and mentally.

    Daily Schedule (Monday–Thursday)
There are two training sessions offered daily:

    • 6:30 AM Session
    • 8:30 AM Session

Students may attend any session; however, to best support sport-specific training needs and training intensity, we recommend the following:

    • 6:30 AM – Male Student Athletes
    • 8:30 AM – Female Student Athletes

These recommendations are based on training structure, equipment use, and group pacing to ensure students receive the most effective workout environment possible.

    Credit & Participation Options
Summer Physical Education may be taken for academic credit or for conditioning purposes only.

Students who enroll in Summer PE for credit must:

    • Attend consistently during both June and July
    • Meet all participation, attendance, and performance expectations
    • Complete any required assessments or course requirements

Credit will be awarded only to students who successfully complete the full duration of the course and meet established standards.

Because Summer PE is a high-intensity, performance-based course, the grading structure reflects effort, participation, and demonstrated improvement. Students who are striving to maintain or achieve the highest possible GPA in their grade level should carefully consider how this course grade may factor into their overall academic average.

    Students Participating for Conditioning Only
Some students may choose to participate strictly for fitness and athletic conditioning, without receiving academic credit. These students:

    • May attend sessions for training purposes
    • Are still expected to follow all behavioral and safety expectations
    • Are not required to complete course assessments and will not receive a grade

This option is ideal for students who want the physical benefits of structured summer training without impacting their academic transcript. Students and families are encouraged to consider their academic goals and athletic needs when deciding whether to enroll in Summer PE for credit or for conditioning purposes only.

  • Summer School Personal Finance is a class that is only offered to students that have not previously taken a Personal Finance course and want to complete this credit during summer term. Students that have previously taken and failed a personal finance course will recover this credit in summer school credit recovery.

This class is a hybrid course and only meets at JHS once per week. Most of the coursework is done from home and monitored by a Joplin High School teacher.
