Message from the Principal

Good Afternoon Joplin High School Eagles Family! I hope you all have had an awesome week and have gotten to spend some quality time with those you love this weekend.

We had another AWESOME week of school! The staff at JHS are selfless, dedicated, and all about student success. In this edition of the Weekly Memo, you will learn about two of those staff members, Ms. Jada Reed-Mason and Ms. Lindsay DeWelt.

If there is anything you ever need, please feel free to call me at 417.625.5230 or email me at randyoliver@joplinschools.org. As we make our way toward Thanksgiving, please remember to WORK HARD, BE KIND, and GO EAGLES!

Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Oliver

Teacher Spotlight #1

Ms. Jada Reed-Mason

Jada Reed Mason is in her third year at JHS, where she has taught Geometry and Algebra I-A, and currently serves as a Freshman 101 teacher—a class she especially enjoys. A proud Joplin High School graduate from the Class of 2017, Jada began her journey in education as a substitute teacher before stepping into a full-time teaching role. She is currently majoring in Social Studies Education through Missouri Southern and also holds a degree in Occupational Therapy from Crowder College. Her passion for helping others extends beyond the classroom—she works at a local nursing home for the past eight years and serves as her youth group leader at her church.

Jada and her husband, Kenneth, have been married for four years. Kenneth works in sales at Lowe’s Distribution, and together they are raising three wonderful children—7-year-old twins, Jaydee and Jaylee, who attend Kelsey Norman, and their 3-year-old, Zariah who attends JEC.

Outside of teaching, Jada loves spending time with her family, traveling, and organizing fun family events. She’s often the planner behind family potlucks and outings. Jada loves staying busy, always looking for new hobbies and ways to serve others. Her drive to use her time, energy, and talents to make a difference truly reflects her belief in living life to its fullest potential.

Teacher Spotlight #2

Ms. Lindsay DeWelt

Now in her sixth year at JHS, Lindsay DeWelt brings real-world experience and energy to the Business and Marketing program with FTC. After earning her Marketing degree from Missouri State University, Lindsay began a career in corporate management—right as the financial crisis hit. Seeing so many people struggle inspired her to pursue a more meaningful path, leading her to earn a master’s in teaching. She began her education career at Sarcoxie, teaching a wide range of business classes before moving to Joplin to work in a true career and technical education setting.

At JHS, Lindsay teaches Intro to Marketing, Advanced Marketing, Social Media Advertising, Business Leadership, DC Marketing, and COE, where students gain hands-on experience working in the community. She also oversees marketing internships with local nonprofits, sponsors DECA, and manages the school’s coffee shop—something she jokingly calls her “second full-time job.” Outside the classroom, Lindsay coaches 8th grade volleyball, having stepped back from the high school level to find better balance.

Originally from Neosho, Lindsay lives in Joplin with her husband, David, who teaches Spanish at Thomas Jefferson Elementary, and their two dogs, Uncle Baby Billy and Ruffis.

When she’s not teaching or coaching, Lindsay loves going to concerts—she’s been to 86 so far! Her all-time favorite was Cake, though her music taste ranges from Otis Redding to Tyler, the Creator. Weekends often find her sketching, listening to records, or attending local events like PorchFest. A big sports fan, Lindsay watches something athletic every day, especially soccer (Crystal Palace is her favorite team), the Chiefs, and the WNBA.

Her dream? To one day have a cozy cottage in a cooler climate—something straight out of Virgin River—where she can enjoy quiet moments, volunteer at an animal shelter, and fully recharge her “social battery.”

QUALITY ATTENDANCE - Exempt From Finals

Below, you will find a flow chart that explains the process for determining Quality Attendance at JHS. We define quality attendance as 93% Attendance Rate or higher. If a student has a 93% attendance rate or higher, they may be exempt from finals.

Please keep in mind, for this exemption, 93% is 93% attendance rate, factoring out all absences. In other words medical appointments is counted as an absence. It is not a punishment if a student has to take the finals if the student doesn't reach 93%. It is a reward for those students who earned a 93% attendance rate for the entire semester.

Further, remember that some advanced, AP, and/or Dual Credit classes may have a REQUIRED final.

I would like to give a shout out to the following people:

I would like to give a shout out to the following people:

To al the fall coaches for their work with our student athletes. I realize they get stipends for their work, but this amount does not even come close to making sense compared to the time they put in. Thank you to all of you for the amount of time you pour in to our Eagles.

Freshman 101 Teachers and the Counselors for the completion of the Freshman Minute where our counselors meet with every freshman student as a simple touch-point for them. Thank you for making the connection with our freshmen!

Mr. Jay Stubbs, for his continued work during lunch to keep our hallways cleared. We have made a dedicated effort to minimize the number of students in the hall, and we hope you are noticing the difference. Thank you Mr. Stubbs!
