Message from the Principal

Good Afternoon Joplin High School Eagles Family! I hope you all have had an awesome week and have gotten to spend some quality time with those you love this weekend.

We had a great week of school, and as we head toward Thanksgiving, I hope you are as thankful as I am for the staff we surround your student with each and every day. They are selfless, dedicated, and all about student success. In this edition of the Weekly Memo, you will learn about two of those staff members Mr. Jaren Hulette and Mr. Colin McElligott.

If there is anything you ever need, please feel free to call me at 417.625.5230 or email me at randyoliver@joplinschools.org. As we make our way toward parent-teacher conferences, please remember to WORK HARD, BE KIND, and GO EAGLES!

Your Proud Principal,
Dr. Oliver

Teacher Spotlight #1

Mr. Jaren Hulette

Jaren Huelette joined Joplin High School with a strong background in business education and a passion for coaching. After graduating from Missouri Southern State University in 2018, he began his teaching career at Liberal High School, where he taught business courses for two years. He then spent five years at Carthage High School, teaching and coaching both softball and baseball before coming to Joplin this year. At JHS, Jaren teaches Introduction to Business and Personal Finance in the FTC program, and he proudly serves as the Head Softball Coach.

Family plays a big role in Jaren’s life. He and his wife, Kylie, who works in logistics at HE Williams in Carthage, have three children—Jaylynn, a freshman at Carthage High; Grady, a third grader; and baby Rustin, who is almost one. Family connections run deep—his brother-in-law, Gabe Cravens, is also here at JHS.

Outside of school and coaching, Jaren enjoys spending time with his family, cheering on his kids at their activities, and attending Kansas City Chiefs games as a season ticket holder. Looking ahead, he and his family dream of traveling the world and exploring new places together—making memories wherever life takes them.

Teacher Spotlight #2

Mr. Colin McElligott

This is Colin McElligott’s third year at JHS, where he teaches Special Education Math and co-teaches in math classrooms throughout the day. His path to education wasn’t traditional—after earning his General Education degree from Harding University, Colin worked in armed security and later tried his hand at insurance which brought him to Joplin. Realizing insurance wasn’t his passion, he began substitute teaching and completed his certification through the TAC program at Joplin Schools. In addition to teaching, Colin also works part-time at Sam’s Club.

Originally from upstate New York, near Syracuse, Colin grew up with his mom, sister, and brother in an area that averages nearly 10 feet of snow each winter. While he misses the fall colors, he doesn’t miss the long winters. He’s been married to his wife, Hannah, for seven and a half years, and together they have a two-and-a-half-year-old daughter, Aminah, who keeps them busy and entertained.

Outside of school, Colin enjoys reading with his wife and spending time outdoors. The family loves hiking at Wildcat Glades, where Aminah’s favorite activity is throwing stones into the river. He also has some unforgettable stories from his time in security work—including helping law enforcement track down and transport students during his earlier career (ask him about this).

Looking ahead, Colin hopes to one day spend more time volunteering in his community—staying active and engaged, because sitting still has never been his style.

Student ID Update

Student ID with Lanyards

Students will be given ID's with a lanyard to wear beginning this week. There are many things that the ID can be used for, but the most important reason is identification during a crisis. We will use these to also check in to games, checking in to school when a student is late, and during tardy sweeps in the hall. If a student loses their ID or does not have it, they will have to get one at a cost of $5, which can be placed on the student's account and paid at a later date.

These ID's will be critical in case of emergency and is what is driving the thought process for every student having and wearing it.

I would like to give a shout out to the following people:

I would like to give a shout out to the following people:

Ms. Julie McCain and Mr. Nick Reid for carving pumpkins with their students. Thank you for creating unforgettable experiences for our students Ms. McCain and Mr. Reid.

STU-CO sponsors and students for the work that goes in to pulling off an event such as Trunk or Treat / Halloween Bash. Further, I would like to thank Fusion and Fusion Students for donating candy to be given our during the event. Finally, I would like to thank all of the Student Organizations/Clubs that participated in making this event a success. I have heard from many parents/community members how much they and their student(s) loved the event. It truly is a staple of our community during Halloween time! Thank you STU-CO!

Mr. Bennett and Mr. Hancock for their work in getting elementary math tutoring off the ground. Those elementary students IDOLIZE the "big kids" and will look forward to learning from them. Thank you Mr. Hancock and Mr. Bennett for creating unforgettable experiences for our FUTURE EAGLES!

Employment Opportunity

Substitute Bus Drivers

CALLING ALL PARENTS, FRIENDS, AND FAMILIES:

Our students need you. Please fill out an application to be a substitute bus driver. We have drivers to cover all routes, but we need more substitutes for when regular drivers are sick, injured, take off for family issues (that happens A LOT), or the huge amount of trips that happen district wide everyday. It's just like not having enough subs for teachers except everyone notices the buses because the kids are either late to school or late getting home and it interrupts the schedule. Also, just like subs for teachers, our subs can pick and choose when they want to be available.

Please consider filling out an application to be a sub bus driver, so we can continue to have our kids to school and home on time.
