Career Paths

In September 2014, Joplin Schools and the Joplin community celebrated the opening of the new Joplin High School / Franklin Technology Center. We not only celebrated a new, beautiful school but also a new and exciting approach to education with Joplin Schools Career Path curriculum.

Subject Mastery & Employability Skills
Students attending JHS/FTC can choose one of five general Career Paths. These paths, developed and implemented by school, community, and business representatives, center around core foundational knowledge and skills, plus the soft skills employers demand from their employees. These skills include attendance, completing work on time, and other characteristics necessary for success in the real work world. Students will receive grades for their understanding and mastery of subject matter and a be evaluated on their “employability” based on their performance of these soft skills.

Career Path Awareness & Exploration K-12
This is not just a high school program. Students at Joplin Schools are introduced to Career Paths beginning in elementary school where they focus on career awareness. At the middle school level, students explore various career opportunities so that when they reach high school, they will have a better understanding of their strengths and areas of interest. When they enter high school, they will be prepared to choose a Career Path but also have the opportunity to change their minds and pursue different paths without the risk of losing credits or the foundational knowledge needed to reach graduation.

Relevant, Real-World Learning
The goal of the Career Path approach to learning is to provide a more relevant education for Joplin students through real-world experiences in various fields and occupations without giving up all the activities and events that give students a true “high school” experience. Through this approach to learning, students will be more successful in school and in life and more prepared, whether they go directly into the work force or continue their education through college or a trade school.
