Smart Tips for College & Scholarship Applications

Applying for college and scholarships can feel overwhelming, but with some planning, you’ll be ready to shine. Here are some easy tips to help you stay on track:

1. Work on Drafts First

  • Most applications are online now, but it’s smart to keep answers in Google Docs or Word so you don’t lose them.

  • Double-check spelling and grammar. Ask a teacher, friend, or family member to look things over before you hit “submit.”

2. Create a Resume or “Brag Sheet”

  • Teachers and counselors may not know about everything you do outside of class.

  • Share a resume or activity list that shows your grades, activities, volunteer work, jobs, and awards.

  • Free templates in Google Docs or Canva make it easy to create one.

3. Ask Early for Recommendations

  • Give teachers, counselors, or coaches at least 3–4 weeks before the deadline.

  • Most recommendations are submitted online, so share the link or instructions clearly.

  • Send a kind reminder as the deadline gets closer.

4. Pick the Right People

  • Choose people who know you well and can say positive things about your strengths.

  • Teachers, mentors, coaches, and employers often make great choices.

5. Be Someone Worth Recommending

  • Your attitude, effort, and behavior matter. Show up, work hard, and be respectful.

  • Always say thank you—a quick note or email shows you appreciate their time.

6. Stay Organized

  • Keep a checklist or spreadsheet of deadlines and requirements.

  • Mark off tasks as you finish them so nothing slips through the cracks.

  • Remember: you’re the one responsible for making sure everything gets done on time.

Bottom line: Stay organized, be respectful, and give your recommenders the tools they need. If you do that, you’ll be in great shape to earn scholarships and college acceptances!
